Somewhere to Belong: Welcome to Mama’s Garden!
Abstract
In this paper, I will talk about the last chapter of my practice-based PhD, which explores the concept of ‘belonging’ and the use of the artistic methodologies of creating a space and performing in that created space for a fixed period of time. One’s identity is formed from hundreds of particles of memories and continues to re-shape itself in reaction to different personal experiences. And the most significant of all changes in one’s life is, relocation from a place one call it as a home. The fundamental element of the concept of ‘belonging’ is based on a complex dimension of a feeling of a ‘displaced’ individual. The act of re-enacting the feeling of ‘belonging’ temporarily provokes the hidden emotions of the individual who is engaged in it. This particular behaviour of seeking for somewhere to belong is a constant but subtle process of a shaping of a new identity.
I will take an example of my recent public art installation titled ‘Mama’s Garden: Words of Love’ as an evidence of the methods mentioned above. As part of the preparation of the project, I carried out two performances and produced series of self-portraits wearing handmade dress and my mother’s garments. After that I created a site-specific art installation inspired by my mother’s dream to have a garden and I performed as a hostess of the garden for 8 days wearing my mother’s garment and engaged with public directly.
